eMAR tracks an expiry date on each medication record. When the date passes, the medication's auto_expired flag flips and the medication is hidden from the live administration timeline so it can't accidentally be given.
What you'll see
On the eMAR dashboard — expired medications are marked clearly and aren't eligible for recording.
In notification errors — the
medication_expiringnotification flags upcoming expiry. Open eMAR → Notification errors to see which medications need attention.
What to do when something expires
Stop using the medication.
Either return the remaining stock to the pharmacy or dispose of it according to your CD/disposal policy. Record the movement.
Contact the prescriber if the supported person still needs the medication.
When new stock arrives with a new expiry, update the medication record's expiry date.
Heads up — Expiry tracking in Carerealm is per-medication, not per-batch. If you receive two batches of the same medication with different expiry dates, only the medication-record's expiry is tracked — typically you set this to the earlier of the two. When that expiry hits, do a physical check of the remaining stock to decide what's usable.
Note — There is no
emar.medication_expiringworkflow trigger — the expiry is surfaced via the notification stream, not as a workflow start signal. Don't look for it in the workflow builder.
