Channel roles and ownership

Three roles per channel: owner, admin, member. Plus the sole-owner handoff flow.

The three roles

Role

Can do

Owner

Everything: send, edit channel name/description, change visibility, promote/demote members, transfer ownership, archive.

Admin

Send, manage members, change channel settings, archive. Cannot promote/demote members or transfer ownership.

Member

Send, react, pin, react. Cannot manage the channel itself.

Note — Realm admins can do everything in every channel as a break-glass — they always appear with effective owner permissions even if not explicitly listed as the owner.

Promoting and demoting

  1. Open the channel's members list (channel header → member count).

  2. Click a member → ⋯ → Make owner / Make admin / Demote / Remove.

Only the current owner (or a realm admin) can change roles. Channel admins can manage members but not promote them above their own role.

Sole-owner handoff

If you're the only owner of a channel and want to leave, Carerealm runs an atomic handoff: pick the new owner from the dialog, the system promotes them before removing you. A channel can't exist without an owner.
